A discussion held in class,
In my opinion, humans can vary when it comes to whether or not they are rational. I feel this way for many reasons. We as humans do make choice everyday whether it be where we go to college or what shirt we are going to wear on a particular day. Some humans are better equipped to make these decisions over others. It is just like some humans are faster runners while others can't run fast at all but can answer a math question in only minutes.
To figure this out, you need to look at an individual and how they make decisions. Some may make quick irrational decisions and others may take their time and really think things through. Every person in the world can make a bad decision sometime in their life. I think that at times humans can be rational and others they can make no sense what so ever. An example that comes from my life would be that I generally make good decisions. I usually choose to get work done early and stay on top of my classes and I choose to have a part-time job. But I have made a couple bad decisions before that are definitely not rational. I decided to sneak out of my house my freshmen year to hang out with friends past my curfew. This was a bad decision. I am not irrational for it, I learned from the situation though.
I believe humans become more rational throughout their lives as they "live and learn". To me to be a completely rational person, you need to be perfect and that I know is impossible. No one is perfect, but as we learn and grow from the different decisions we make over the coarse of our lives, we become more rational. If a person doesn't they receive consequences for their actions and that is how our society works. In conclusion, we as humans can sometimes be rational and other times not be, but because of that fact we have better adapted to the world around us.
How does this segment from a class discussion define humans? The answer is that the way people choose to act and whether to make decisions with their head or their heart makes us human. We don't always make the right decisions but because we are irrational sometimes we learn from the wrong decisions so next time we can make right ones. It is amazing how much humans have learned from thinking irrationally. Without that we would not be as developed or the humans that we are, today.
